YMCA Ipswich

JT Wilding’s largest single project to date, for the YMCA in Ipswich, completed at the end of November 2019

JTW have an existing relationship with the YMCA, namely a boiler service contract covering several properties in Suffolk. When approached by their Facilities Manager, Jon Cooper, to provide a quotation for major replacement work on their heating and hot water services, we duly obliged.

The period of consultation and tender process was brief; a start date and completion date before the onset of the coldest of weather arrived was essential. The task was to replace five old hot water cylinders with five high recovery modern equivalents, replace all heating pumps, controls and control panels within their main residential building. In addition, we also replaced the entire boiler house mechanical services and controls for the adjacent Hostel building.

There were several challenges to overcome and keeping the buildings operating with minimal disruption to the services, a major factor. Equipment was replaced piecemeal and temporary arrangements made to ensure residents had hot water and heating available as far as possible.

Another feature of the project was the collaboration of business units within the Barnes Group. With engineer support from Bower Fuller and plant and equipment largely provided by the Groups’ own plant department.

Controls package was carried out by Universal Systems Controls in Ipswich.

Quote from YMCA Facilities & Maintenance Manager:

“This was a large project for us and value for money within the charity is obviously very important. The Ipswich YMCA is under the umbrella of YMCA Trinity Group, a regional charity managing over 50 properties. As an Ipswich born and bred person I was delighted to be able to appoint J T Wilding, a local company to undertake these works. The team led by Bill and Ray have worked really well with myself and my own in house maintenance team and as the project nears completion I have so far been very pleased with how the project has gone. With a project of this size there will always issues along the way but, Bill Cox has been very responsive to the needs and happy to come to site and help us to work through the so called snagging issues along the way.”
